Executive Intelligence & Board Governance Platform
Client: OpenDirector is an Australian SaaS platform that provides real-time data on company directors and executives, including their backgrounds, board roles, remuneration, and professional networks.
The Challenge
As the product matured, OpenDirector faced a critical transition when its core development team moved off the project.
The immediate priority was to maintain business continuity and platform stability while ensuring product development did not slow down.
The transition created several challenges:
- Loss of existing technical and product knowledge
- Risk of disruption to ongoing development and releases
- Need to quickly establish ownership of the existing codebase
- Requirement to continue delivering new features and enhancements
- Need for a structured development and release process to support long-term growth
The challenge was not simply to take over development. It was to transition ownership smoothly while maintaining platform reliability and continuing the product roadmap.
Our Approach
We took end-to-end ownership of the platform and established a dedicated team of two developers to manage both ongoing development and platform evolution.
1. Seamless Technical Ownership Transition
We quickly familiarized ourselves with the existing Ruby on Rails and React.js codebase, application architecture, business workflows, and deployment processes. We established clear ownership of development, maintenance, releases, and technical improvements, ensuring the transition from the previous team did not impact business operations.
2. Established Structured Agile Delivery
We introduced structured Agile development and release management practices, including backlog planning, prioritization, development workflows, and stakeholder collaboration. This created a predictable process for managing both business priorities and technical improvements.
3. Continued Product Development
While maintaining the existing platform, we continued delivering new features and product enhancements across the SaaS application. Development was prioritized around business requirements while ensuring new functionality integrated reliably with the existing platform.
4. Improved Platform Performance and Scalability
We identified areas for optimization within the existing application and implemented performance and architectural improvements using Ruby on Rails, React.js, and AWS. These improvements strengthened the platform's ability to support growing usage and future product expansion.
5. Established a Foundation for Long-Term Development
Beyond individual feature delivery, we focused on improving the maintainability of the platform and creating development practices that could support continued evolution. This ensured the platform was not only maintained after the transition but positioned for ongoing product development.
