Telecom Operations Automation Platform
Client: Magna5 provides cloud and IT infrastructure solutions for mid-market enterprises across the US
The Challenge
Magna5 needed to modernize and scale its telecom operations while managing increasingly complex and data-intensive workflows.
The platform needed to:
- Process high volumes of Call Detail Records (CDRs) from multiple carriers
- Automate billing, reconciliation, and settlement workflows
- Manage circuit and DID inventory
- Streamline provisioning processes
- Process real-time events across critical business operations
- Archive approximately 1 TB of CDR data every month
- Maintain four years of online historical data for operational and compliance requirements
- Provide comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and distributed tracing across mission-critical services
Beyond the technology challenge, Magna5 needed a long-term engineering partner capable of building and leading a dedicated development team, owning end-to-end delivery, and providing continuous support across time zones.
The objective was to build more than a collection of telecom applications. It was to establish a scalable, event-driven operations platform capable of supporting the customer's growing business at enterprise scale.
Our Approach
We designed and delivered a microservices-based, event-driven telecom platform consisting of more than 50 Go services.
The architecture was built around five core principles:
1. Built a Microservices-Based Telecom Platform
We decomposed core telecom operations into 50+ independent Go services, allowing business capabilities to evolve and scale independently.
Services communicated through HTTP APIs and NATS Cluster ESB, enabling high-performance service-to-service communication and asynchronous event processing.
The platform automated key operational areas including:
- CDR processing
- Billing
- Reconciliation
- Provisioning
- Circuit management
- DID inventory
- Real-time event processing
2. Implemented Event-Driven Processing
We adopted an event-driven architecture using NATS to enable real-time communication between services and decouple critical business workflows.
This allowed events generated by one part of the telecom lifecycle to trigger downstream processes without tightly coupling individual services.
3. Built a Large-Scale Data Management Architecture
The platform processed and archived approximately 1 TB+ of CDR data every month.
We used different data technologies based on workload requirements:
- PostgreSQL for transactional workloads
- Redis for caching and high-speed data access
- Snowflake for analytics and large-scale data processing
- Azure Blob Storage for long-term CDR archival
The architecture supported approximately four years of online historical data, balancing operational accessibility with long-term storage requirements.
4. Automated CI/CD and Containerized Delivery
We implemented automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Drone CI and standardized application deployment through Kubernetes and Kustomize.
This created a consistent process for building, testing, deploying, and managing the platform's large number of services.
5. Established Enterprise-Grade Observability
With more than 50 distributed services handling mission-critical telecom workflows, visibility across the platform was essential.
We implemented an observability stack using:
- Prometheus for metrics
- Loki for centralized logging
- OpenTelemetry for telemetry collection
- Tempo for distributed tracing
This provided engineering teams with end-to-end visibility into service health, application behavior, and distributed transactions.
6. Built and Led a Dedicated Engineering Team
The engagement extended beyond platform development. We built and led a dedicated team of eight engineers over three years, taking ownership of technical delivery, engineering practices, and continuous platform evolution.
The team operated across time zones to provide ongoing development and support aligned with Magna5's operational requirements.
"I have worked with Gaurav for over five years. He has the ability to build teams and deliver software efficiently. The way he facilitates the communication models makes life much easier. I have worked with other teams in India but it did not work. Gaurav made it work and in fact, we grew the team in India. Although he runs the show, he always works with his team in the trenches and makes sure round the clock development with the US and India team. He is an engineer with a technical background and his leadership skills are something to be reckoned with. I definitely recommend working with him."
